Clothes For Snow Camping

Have you ever thought about camping in the snow? We have thought about it several times but never actually planned a trip. A lot goes into planning a snow camping trip including the essential clothes you must take with you.

Warm clothing is a must and should consist of three layers. A wicking layer that is next to the skin to wick moisture away, an insulating layer that traps warm air that your body has heated up, and a protective layer that protects the two inner layers from wind, rain, and snow, such as Gore-Tex.

Give Those Kids Whistles

December 11, 2006 - Tag: Camping Equipment - Feedback (1)

When you are out camping in the wilderness with children it is very important that they have a whistle on them at all times. If they wander off and get lost this could literally be a lifesaver. Any type of whistle will do the trick, but I recommend the American Whistle Company Classic Brass Whistle from REI for $3.95. It has a lanyard so they can wear it around their neck without the fear of them dropping and losing it.

We actually spent a night in the mountains last year where a family had lost a small child. He simply wandered too far from their campsite and they couldn’t find him for almost 4 hours. Luckily he was found, but if he had a whistle, a lot of time and fear could have been eliminated. Having a whistle is a must have if you are taking children camping.

Have any of you tried to pop JiffyPop Popcorn over a campfire? Did you have any luck with it? This is our video from our lame attempt at trying it the last time we camped at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. We were not so successful but we had a great time trying it!

Reserving a Campsite

December 6, 2006 - Tag: Camp Sites - Feedback (1)

We have found that the best online service for reserving campsites is ReserveAmerica. It gives you different options to choose from on the type of campsite you want like RVs, tent, lodges, group sites, boat sites, horse sites, day use, and trailers. Of course we recommend using a tent, but it is your choice. Next you put in your state and you can choose for them to locate a campsite for you, or you can type in the name of a specific one you want to stay at.

Our last campsite in the campground Hilltop on Mt. Charleston was reserved by using ReserveAmerica. We had already jotted down campsites that we liked there so choosing just the right one on the site was simple. It was fast and easy to use, and it worked out perfectly. The camp host had our name on her chart when we arrived and we set up camp within an hour from leaving our house.
