Give Those Kids Whistles

December 11, 2006 - Tag: Camping Equipment

When you are out camping in the wilderness with children it is very important that they have a whistle on them at all times. If they wander off and get lost this could literally be a lifesaver. Any type of whistle will do the trick, but I recommend the American Whistle Company Classic Brass Whistle from REI for $3.95. It has a lanyard so they can wear it around their neck without the fear of them dropping and losing it.

We actually spent a night in the mountains last year where a family had lost a small child. He simply wandered too far from their campsite and they couldn’t find him for almost 4 hours. Luckily he was found, but if he had a whistle, a lot of time and fear could have been eliminated. Having a whistle is a must have if you are taking children camping.

That is a great point. We also provided our son with a battery powered lightstick. It is similar to the glosticks, but with an on and off switch. He loved playing with the light and if he started to wander away, we could see him in the dark.
