Soupstock - Dry Lake Bed - Las Vegas, NV

Soupstock was a success, and we had a really good time. We met some great people, and ate great soup. It was really windy, so setting up the tent was a true chore. We finally got it up, and got to sit down and relax. Sometime during the night the wind picked up, and it started to rain, but we stayed warm and dry inside our tent.

I tried to blog a couple times from my cell phone, but it doesn’t appear that it worked out all that well, so here are the pictures that got lost in cyberspace.

The Sun is Coming and We Need a Boat

April 12, 2007 - Tag: Camping Equipment - Feedback (1)

One place we love to camp is out on Lake Mead, but not during the summer. It’s just too hot, and unless you are in the water the whole time, you are just burning up. I remember last summer when we sat on the beach and watched all the boats out on the lake. At that very moment is the time when you really want to buy a boat.

Having a boat in this type of heat and sunlight, requires having really nice bayliner boat covers, or else you interior will fade, and crack. When you spend that type of money, you want to protect your investment. I like the looks of the Sunbrella boat covers, and they are very popular on Lake Mead. It keeps you safe from the sun, while still enjoying being out on the water.

One of my most favorite boats on the lake are the pontoons. You can carry a lot of people, throw a keg of beer on it, and party on the lake all day long. Every time I see a group of them out on the lake, I wish I could join them. They are the ultimate party boat.

Soupstock in Las Vegas

April 11, 2007 - Tag: Camping Recipes, Camping Trips - Feedbacks (6)

We’re getting ready for our first trip out this year coming up on Saturday, and I’m getting very excited. I have a great urge to get the hell out of the bright lights, and into the wilderness.

This weekend will be a little group camping, with a local group of people that get together every few months and hold “theme camps.” In the past they have had Cheesestock, Chocolatestock, Veggiestock, and Meatstock. This weekends theme is Soupstock.

Basically what that means is each set of campers makes a soup, and you walk around to the different sites trying other people’s creations. The aforementioned themes are pretty much the same, just different ingredients. It’s a family and pet friendly event, and they highly discourage the use of illegal drugs, swingers, nakie people, etc. It’s just about camping, cooking, and meeting new people who love to camp. It’s perfect for us, and we are excited to go out on our first adventure with the group.

And this yummy soup creation is what we are making and sharing with the group.

Guinness Beer and Cheese Soup

4 - ounces unsalted butter
1 - cup flour
32 - fluid ounces low sodium chicken broth
32 - fluid ounces hot water
16 - fluid ounces heavy cream
1 pound Gruyere Cheese
2 - bottle Guinness stout (one to use in the soup and one to drink)
2 - tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
garlic powder to taste
fresh chives, snipped,to garnish

1. Melt the butter, add the flour, and stir constantly until slightly browned.
2. Stir in chicken broth and hot water.
3. Stirring constantly, add the cream, Cheez Whiz, Worcestershire sauce, beer, and garlic.
4. Simmer 15 minutes.
5. Garnish with chives.

Sounds yummy doesn’t it! Do you want to join us? Meet us at the dry lake bed at noon. Bring soup, and beer!
