Lake Mead Kingman Wash Camping Trip
We went out to the Arizona side of Lake Mead and camped at Kingman Wash. The turn off is just past the Hoover Dam, and all the parking lots on the left hand side of the road. You will travel on that bumpy and rocky road for about 4 miles, but you really don’t need a truck. We took our Honda Civic and made it down the road just fine. We went out there the weekend before and there were even RV’s that made it down the road. This is a free camping area, and you will need to bring in your own fire wood.
Here are some of the pictures I snapped of this beautiful area.

We are two people who love to go camping and hiking. We love the outdoors, and we are working on becoming as green as we can be.

October 11, 2008 @ 6:48 pmWhat, no pictures of what the wind did to our campsite!?!?
Julie
October 11, 2008 @ 6:54 pmNo I was too busy scrambling around trying to save our shit from blowing in the lake to take a picture of the chaos.
Breezie
October 11, 2008 @ 7:07 pmthat loooks so peaceful, to bad a wind storm had to ruin it for you.
Julie
October 11, 2008 @ 7:53 pmBreezie - there will be another time, the lake isn’t going anywhere

October 11, 2008 @ 9:56 pmThe sky is sooo blue! It looks like a fun place to camp. What kind of bugs do you have to watch out for out there?
Julie
October 11, 2008 @ 10:01 pmKaren- there are just flies mostly, and I did see a couple wasps.

October 12, 2008 @ 1:08 amThe photos are great! I cant get that crispness out of my camera! Hope you enjoyed it despite the wind.
Julie
October 12, 2008 @ 1:27 amChristina thecoffeelady - my camera is a Sony and it was under $200. BEST camera I have ever owned! We did have a great time before the sand storm came in.

October 12, 2008 @ 4:45 amIt must be really cold in the morning. Or night. I remembered shivering in my last camp out.

October 12, 2008 @ 10:39 amWhat a remote and desolate lookig place it could almost be the moon! Love the peacefulness of the lake photo.

October 12, 2008 @ 11:07 amwow it looks beautiful. Great pictures, i wish we had free camping places as beuatiful here.

October 12, 2008 @ 5:53 pmLive here in Vegas just minutes from the Lake. It’s shocking…. Overton Beach gone! The lake is drying up at an alarming right! My suggestion, come see it before you can’t!

October 12, 2008 @ 8:55 pmI can see why you would have to bring your own firewood. It looks like a desolate place to me- I prefer to be near trees and greenery.
Julie
October 12, 2008 @ 9:56 pmmistipurple - not at this time of the year! It’s still in the high desert and it’s about 115 degrees during the day out there.
Julie
October 12, 2008 @ 9:56 pmcady - do you go camping often? It’s my favorite thing to do!
Julie
October 12, 2008 @ 9:57 pmgina - It’s a fun getaway and not far from our place at all. I think it took us about 45 minutes from my front door to the spot we set up our tent at.
Scott
October 12, 2008 @ 9:58 pmThe sky and lake look quite tranquil and a plus that it is free to camp.
Julie
October 12, 2008 @ 9:59 pmMark - I ALWAYS think of it as the surface of the moon when we are out there. LOL! During the week we are the only ones there, so it makes it nice for night time “couple” swimming
Julie
October 12, 2008 @ 10:00 pmHellan - it is the only place that I know of on the lake that you can drive up and camp for free. There are plenty of “groomed” areas to camp that charge. Then of course if you have a boat you can camp for free anywhere.
Julie
October 12, 2008 @ 10:01 pmDiane Scott - It’s gone, really? Isn’t that where all the houseboat rentals are located? WOW, I had no idea. That is REALLY sad
Julie
October 12, 2008 @ 10:01 pmvein - thanks, we love it!
Julie
October 12, 2008 @ 10:02 pmFerox - I prefer the mountains also, and we do have those here in the high desert, but being unemployed right now we have to hit up the “free” areas for camping.
Diane Scott
October 12, 2008 @ 10:26 pmHi ya! Got your email, but the return to doesn’t work so I came back here. Yes, the upper portion of Lake Mead that used to reach into Overton and beyond is totally gone. If it weren’t for sludge you could walk right into Arizona. Down further you now travel a 1/2 mile or so to get to the areas (upper) where they dock houseboats. It’s shrinking at an alarming rate! I’d send you pictures, but again your reply to email didn’t work.
Owen
October 12, 2008 @ 10:48 pmWow .. that looks just amazing! .. Can I come next time?
Lisa
October 13, 2008 @ 12:53 amThat looks like a lot of fun! Too bad you didn’t get the sandstorm pics.

October 13, 2008 @ 3:49 amAHA - skinny dipping were you???
Looks like a peaceful, pretty place. Whenever we visit LV we nearly always drive out to the dam or the Valley of Fire - and last time to the Skywalk.
It’s lovely out there, but I always am on the lookout for snakes, or scorpions or whatever, and don’t go too far from the car!
Now I know how to get to the lake, we’ll drive down there next time but I hate camping - it ALWAYS rains on my side of the tent and my sleeping bag gets wet

October 13, 2008 @ 8:25 pmDiane Scott - thanks for letting me know my comment responder wasn’t working. It’s all fixed now. That is so shocking about Overton Beach. That is where we rented our houseboat years ago.
Julie
October 13, 2008 @ 8:26 pmOwen - yep next time you’re in the states, I will take you out there!
Julie
October 13, 2008 @ 8:27 pmLisa - My camera is already all gritty when the lens opens, and it was INSIDE my backpack, INSIDE the tent. I am STILL cleaning sand out of my ears! LOL!
Julie
October 13, 2008 @ 8:27 pmdaria369 - Thanks Daria!

October 14, 2008 @ 4:09 pmLooks beautiful but not my cuppa tea. To me camping is when there’s no restaurant at the hotel

January 19, 2009 @ 8:49 pmWow I was in the same area like 10 years ago! I remember almost running out of gas in the rental car and just making it to a station in the middle of no where and had to pay a few dollars per gallon back then! Very wild area once off the beaten track. Very cool. http://vacationreview.com
