Lake Mead Kingman Wash Camping Trip

October 11, 2008 - Tag: Camping Trips

We went out to the Arizona side of Lake Mead and camped at Kingman Wash.  The turn off is just past the Hoover Dam, and all the parking lots on the left hand side of the road.  You will travel on that bumpy and rocky road for about 4 miles, but you really don’t need a truck.  We took our Honda Civic and made it down the road just fine.  We went out there the weekend before and there were even RV’s that made it down the road.  This is a free camping area, and you will need to bring in your own fire wood.

Here are some of the pictures I snapped of this beautiful area.

No I was too busy scrambling around trying to save our shit from blowing in the lake to take a picture of the chaos.

The sky is sooo blue! It looks like a fun place to camp. What kind of bugs do you have to watch out for out there?

Karen- there are just flies mostly, and I did see a couple wasps.

Christina thecoffeelady - my camera is a Sony and it was under $200. BEST camera I have ever owned! We did have a great time before the sand storm came in.

Live here in Vegas just minutes from the Lake. It’s shocking…. Overton Beach gone! The lake is drying up at an alarming right! My suggestion, come see it before you can’t!

I can see why you would have to bring your own firewood. It looks like a desolate place to me- I prefer to be near trees and greenery.

mistipurple - not at this time of the year! It’s still in the high desert and it’s about 115 degrees during the day out there.

gina - It’s a fun getaway and not far from our place at all. I think it took us about 45 minutes from my front door to the spot we set up our tent at.

Mark - I ALWAYS think of it as the surface of the moon when we are out there. LOL! During the week we are the only ones there, so it makes it nice for night time “couple” swimming ;)

Hellan - it is the only place that I know of on the lake that you can drive up and camp for free. There are plenty of “groomed” areas to camp that charge. Then of course if you have a boat you can camp for free anywhere.

Hi ya! Got your email, but the return to doesn’t work so I came back here. Yes, the upper portion of Lake Mead that used to reach into Overton and beyond is totally gone. If it weren’t for sludge you could walk right into Arizona. Down further you now travel a 1/2 mile or so to get to the areas (upper) where they dock houseboats. It’s shrinking at an alarming rate! I’d send you pictures, but again your reply to email didn’t work.

AHA - skinny dipping were you???

Looks like a peaceful, pretty place. Whenever we visit LV we nearly always drive out to the dam or the Valley of Fire - and last time to the Skywalk.

It’s lovely out there, but I always am on the lookout for snakes, or scorpions or whatever, and don’t go too far from the car!

Now I know how to get to the lake, we’ll drive down there next time but I hate camping - it ALWAYS rains on my side of the tent and my sleeping bag gets wet :)
